The leaching of Eucalyptus hybrids and Acacia auriculiformis leaf litter: laboratory experiments on early decomposition and ecological implications in congolese tree plantations

چکیده

The ®rst stage of leaf litter decomposition of two eucalyptus hybrids and Acacia auriculiformis was studied in laboratory experiments where the decaying leaves were leached with water. Although the litter of both the species were characterized by a high content of soluble compounds, little soluble organic matter of acacia litter was recovered in litter leachates. By contrast, soluble organic matter of eucalyptus litter was more resistant to degradation and was, therefore, recovered in leachates, where soluble carbon amounts and coloration varied with the age of decomposing litter. The pH of eucalyptus litter leachates decreased at the beginning of the experiment whereas the pH of acacia litter leachates increased. When added to savanna soil, litter leachates mobilized iron into soil solution, with greater effects observed from eucalyptus than from acacia. In bioassay, litter leachates were added to sand in which test plant seedlings were grown, and a strong allelopathic activity was observed with leachates from the ®rst days of eucalyptus litter decomposition. Leachates from older litter did not show any effect. The possible ecological implications of the observed processes are discussed. # 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Litter Production Dynamic in relation to Climatic Factors in Tree Plantations

We studied litterfall dynamic of tree plantations in Dez River floodplain, at 14 to 15 years old. The plantations consist of Populus euphratica Oliv., Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh., E. microtheca F. Muell, Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd., A. salicina Lindl., A. saligna (Labill.) H. Wendl., A. stenophylla Benth. and Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. Litterfall was different between the tree species, and le...

Changes in litter, decomposition, nitrogen mineralization and microclimate in Acacia mangium and Acacia auriculiformis plantation in Mount Makiling, Philippines

The objectives of this study were to examine litter, decomposition, net mineralization and microclimate by two leguminous species planted for the restoration of degraded area. The total annual litter fall in A. mangium site was 11.44±0.59 (mean ± standard error) t ha -1 yr -1 and A. auriculiformis site was 8.72±0.57 t ha -1 yr -1 . Decomposition constant (k) of A. mangium and A. auriculiformis ...

Effects of the Interception of Litterfall by the Understory on Carbon Cycling in Eucalyptus Plantations of South China

For the purposes of forest restoration, carbon (C) fixation, and economic improvement, eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla) has been widely planted in South China. The understory of eucalyptus plantations is often occupied by a dense community of the fern Dicranopteris dichotoma, which intercepts tree canopy leaf litter before it reaches the ground. To understand the effects of this interception o...

Vermicomposting of the leaf litter of acacia (Acacia auriculiformis): possible roles of reactor geometry, polyphenols, and lignin.

Vermicomposting of the pre-composted leaf litter of acacia (Acacia auriculiformis) was studied in reactors of identical volume but with surface area: height ratios varying from 4 to 250. In separate sets of experiments with these reactors, epigeic earthworm species Eudrilus eugeniae and anecic earthworm species Lampito mauritii were employed at densities of 75 and 150 adult animals per litre of...

Impact of Planting Eucalyptus Species on Floodwater Spreading: a Case study of Kowsar Aquifer Station, Fasa, Iran

Kowsar Floodwater Spreading, Aquifer Management, Training and Extension Station was established in 1982 on the Gareh Bygone Plain at 1140 m above sea level. The area has an arid climate and is located 190 km southeast of Shiraz, Iran. Thirteen floodwater spreading systems, covering 2445 ha, were designed and constructed during the 1983-2003 period to artificially recharge groundwater. Eucalyptu...
